Outlook multiple email account problems only showing 1 email with Outlook 17.7167.40818

I have multiple email accounts. On the recent wp10 upgrade (14393.189) which I think occurred on September 23, I could only see contents of 1 email account. Various combinations of that: Sometimes all email accounts were shown in the list, sometimes not. When I switched to another email account, it only displayed the title and then the contents showed my Hotmail. Sometimes it just needed to sync. Other times it crashed.

I knew the emails and folders for the other accounts were still there as I got some notifications on the notification screen that I had emails only gmail. When I clicked that, I was able to see the gmail but nothing else. (So that is work around: Send yourself an email and see the notification – but did not seem to work for exchange/outlook based emails).

I tried hard reboot but that did not work.

Fix was to delete the account that was showing (my Hotmail account, luckily with no contacts attached to it) and then reinstall it (had to do that twice, as the hello/pin authentication ended up with a blank white screen. Inbetween the 2 times, I also used the edge browser to log on.

wp8.1 emulator troubleshooting – Windows Phone OS is starting OR Loading OR freezes

I had lots of issues with getting wp8.1 emulator working with visual studio 2013 update 4, although it worked fine with a physical device.
Challenge is that emulator creates virtual machines and then it is a network connection over to the virtual machine.
Looking at the hyper-v manager, I could see that the virtual machine had been created ok, and VSExpress 2013 was starting it ok (and it stopped and restarted each time I hit debug in VSExpress).
My problem was that we use F-secure as a firewall and it was blocking communication.

My fix: activated airplane mode, disabled firewalls then tried again.
2 minutes in, everything was ok – vm had been created (I was deleting them and the virtual switch before starting each run) and connection had been made.
Second time took 5 seconds to run.

I then switched firewall back on, airplane mode off. Even internet worked.
The only thing it did not seem to survive was an overnight sleep state – but that’s ok.

Note, if I use windows firewall, this already ships with the right port rules – but I could not see anything to do with VS or xde, so must be the generic hyper-v ones.

Really difficult for me to see which are the origin ports, as these are dynamically generated. But I can see that on the emulator it is port 135.

OTHER TROUBLESHOOTING
Along the way, I came across many useful sources of info…

*****
Simple fix might be to plug in the physical LAN cable – don’t ask, just the way hyper-v virtual switches work… (something to do with sharing same MAC).

Windows phone emulator not working (visual studio update 3)?
From

One possible reason for the behavior you are observing is corrupt Hyper-V settings. To correct that, please follow these steps:

1. Close Visual Studio.
2. Open the Hyper-V Manager.
3. Delete all Emulator virtual machines.
4. From the Virtual Switch Manager, delete all Windows Phone Emulator-related switches.
5. Start Visual Studio and try deploying to the Emulator.

When I did that I then got the error: “you do not have permission to modify internal hyper-v network adapter settings, which are required to run the emulator”

Hit retry – but then it paused on the “Windows Phone OS is starting”.
*****

I then tried other format emulators – did not work.

*****
I then tried launching from the command line – works, but then you do not get the connection between the two:
“c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\8.1\xde.exe” /name “Emulator 8.1 U1 1080P 6 inch.myusername” /displayName “Manual” /video “1080×1920”

My actual command line when executed from visual studio:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\8.1\XDE.exe” /name “Emulator 8.1 U1 1080P 6 inch.myusername” /displayName “Emulator 8.1 U1 1080P 6 inch” /vhd “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v8.1\Emulation\Images\flash.update1.vhd” /video “1080×1920” /memsize 2048 /diagonalSize 6 /language 409 /bootlanguage 409 /creatediffdisk “C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XDE\8.1\dd.1080×1920.2048.60.gdr1.vhd” /snapshot /fastShutdown

I was running on a domain where I am not the admin of the domain (that’s why I think I had lots of problems with hyper-v user privileges. Even adding the domain user in via mmc did not help (note: need to be connected to the domain to do that – otherwise you can only add local users).
Good luck!

Nokia amber lumia updates region availability

Amber update is now available. As of today, only 920 had been made available and then only on a few countries, eg: UK, Ireland, etc. Check this page for updates: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/availability-in-europe/

I have a sim free lumia 820 bought from UK, but live in Finland and normally travel frequently. As far as I can work out, the update depends on which country you are currently in. My guess is that if it is not available for your carrier then you can download via wifi with the SIM card out. And of course you could look on the web, eg: Juan’s sky drive, for Nokia care and download the rom yourself – but I would not recommend it. I have lived through the pain of trying to get my lumia 820 on SFR and it was a horrible experience…

From the page above you can also get a list of new features. The 1 thing I want to see is possibility to save apps to the sd cars on 820, but I don’t think it is there 🙁

System.IO.FileNotFoundException System.Windows.Application.LoadComponent facebooklogin

If ever your windows phone crashes without any real explanation, check:
1. startup app in project properties is set (otherwise nothing runs)
2. capabilities are correct, otherwise exceptions happen

For example to load a page that refers to an external web page, you need to have the WEB capability set.
Otherwise you get a really confusing error>
System.IO.FileNotFoundException in your System.Windows.Application.LoadComponent call to your page calling the external page – which makes you think it is your namespace or page name that is wrong…

when I was writing my code for my facebook windows phone app, I noticed you can refer to people with a number and that Mark Zuckerberg was number 4… here’s the others:

4. Mark Zuckerberg, 4 Feb 2004, although timeline says 11 Feb 2004. Launched the wall on 5 Sept 2004
5. Chris Hughes, 17 Jan 2004
6. Dustin Moskovitz, 15 Jan 2004
7. Arie Hasit, 2004- (Arie signed up for facebook 3 weeks before the site started, according to his comment on 18 Jan 2004)
10.Marcel Laverdet, 2006-2011

visual studio source control with team foundation server (tfs)

microsoft are currently providing free use of team foundation server for teams of 5 or less. there are some warnings that indicate they might make this a chargeable service later, but for now take advantage 🙂

btw, if you are wondering why you should use source control, then go off and do your homework. source control is vital. period. if you are wondering why you should use tfs, my thinking is it is an MS tool so will work well with visual studio and for now it is free. when it changes from being free, I will look into github.

this is the way I use it:
open internet explorer (chrome does not always seem to work)
https://tfs.visualstudio.com/
sign in, preferably with your live id (whichever you use on the store)
if you cannot remember your repository, go to account and it is listed there, eg: https://mobileliving.visualstudio.com/
create “New Team Project” – I usually give same name as my project
open visual studio
in solution explorer
click on solution, right click add to source control and select your project
click on solution, check in and provide a label

As you edit files, it does an automatic check out. When you close file/solution/application, it will check in the files.

I have not yet worked out:
LABELS. how to label the code so that I could get version 1.0.0.1 or version 1.0.0.2 of the files I submitted to microsoft marketplace, but will figure that out when needed.
BUILD. you can launch builds on the tfs server, but they never seem to work for me. as I am only 1 developer right now, I am not too worried about this.

rename project in visual studio

Here is the sequence I used to copy a project in visual studio which was previously under source control.

windows explorer
manually rename top 2 folders
runup visual studio – it will say it cannot find the source control. this is ok.
in vss solution explorer
highlight solution and rename
highlight C# project and rename
in text editor
ctrl-h (search and replace) across entire solution
project/properties
check everything is ok here… especially startup object and xap file name (for some reason this was unchanged for me)
manually check/edit (this seemed to be skipped on the ctrl-h)
repositories.config
AppManifest.xaml
exit visual studio
in explorer
delete bin, obj
delete any .vss files referring to your previous source control
run visual studio
build and deploy
add back to source control (see my other post)

for good measure I also uninstalled and reinstalled all the packages via nuget

windows phone toolkit

To get latest version of windows phone toolkit via nuget, which includes the funky Michael Knight progress bar.

Remember to install this to all your projects when you need it, ie: install is project specific and does not apply to the whole of visual studio projects.

UFOinNewYork – whats next?

This is what I am planning to do. I’ve got a few things on the go, so cannot promise to do this anytime soon…

TODO

  • add sounds – these were in the original version, but had to be removed after it failed certification (for not offering a possibility to activate/deactivate sounds).
  • add more difficulty – there are options in the code which have not yet been exposed to the user interface (speed, blocks destroyed per bomb). **Hopefully this fixes the comment from Benutzer on 11/12/2012.
  • add medals – why would you spend all your time on this game (apart from the fun): to be better than your friends!
  • remove first 2-3 columns of blocks. **Hopefully this fixes the comment from Peter on 30/11/2012.
  • high score table
